PENAMPANG: Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Radin Malleh, has urged the Kadazandusun and Murut (KDM) communities to harness their creative and innovative talent in the face of the global economic recession affecting many countries today.
Citing the fallen prices of commodities such as rubber and palm oil, he said Sabah is not immune to the global phenomena, and sooner or later the worst effects of global recession will reach the shorelines.
Radin noted that many businesses in West Malaysia and Singapore are already facing the prospect of being closed down, thus potentially leaving thousands of Sabah workers jobless to face an uncertain future.
He said this when officiating the opening of the seminar entitled, Mastering the M3IQRA System for Practical Creativity leading to Innovation and Problem Solving, organised by Sabah Academy of Leadership and Entrepreneurship (SALT) at KCCI Business Centre, Penampang last Saturday.
The assistant minister applauded SALT for complementing the efforts of the government to promote creativity and innovation among the local communities.
The event was sponsored by Datuk Dr Maximus J Ongkili, who is Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Meanwhile, the guest speaker at the seminar, Lee Yee Dian of Innovation Malaysia Sdn Bhd, urged Malaysians to refine their creative and innovative talent as a key strategy to deal with the economic downturn.
He said contrary to popular belief, creativity and innovation can be learned and practised by anyone who so desire.
Explaining the M3IQRA systems of practical creativity, Lee said the system involves Mind Reset (change the way we think), Motivation (have passion for creativity) and Methods (learn techniques of creativity), and Inquisitiveness (always curious), Questioning (explore by asking), Reasoning (apply logic or analyse) and Action (do or implement).
He said creativity is about generating or getting new ideas, while innovation is acting on the idea or idea implemented.
An idea, he said, comes from a different way of seeing (function of the eyes), fresh way of thinking (function of the brain), and new way of doing (function of the body).
Further he said ideas are things different, fresh, new, unusual, extraordinary, special and outstanding, as opposed to things regular, usual, ordinary, routine, normal, mundane, common and same.
Radin, who attended the one-day seminar, noted that the strengths and opportunities of the Kadazan Dusun and Murut communities are closely related to agriculture and their land resources.
“In order to grow as a community, we must start using our resources and knowledge in an effective manner creatively and innovatively.
“Huge acreage of land remains undeveloped when the world is facing severe food shortage.
“The irony is that we think we are poor when we are actually rich in resources and knowledge,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) president Frederick Lojingki, in his closing remarks, urged the Kadazandusuns and Muruts to view the economic downturn as an opportunity to change their economic fortune for the better.
He said new opportunities would emerge, and Kadazandusun and Murut entrepreneurs must be aware of the changes taking place around them.
While assuring participants that there are ample funds for agro business, he said “they must work hard, change their mind set, maximise use of their creative and innovative talent, and build character and competence in order to survive the economic reality of a global recession.
